Located in the heart of the intramural city of Marrakech, the traditional souks include shops and artisans of all sorts: shoemakers and jewelers, apothecaries and leather makers, carpet and fabric sellers, potters and weavers. They are often grouped in separate, but adjacent neighborhoods, following old traditions and local customs.
As an essential element of traditional urbanism, the souk is a place to explore just as it is one to visit. Being shielded from the sun by mats of braided rattan, it is a joy to walk through the narrow streets that are bustling with an endless motion. Here, the machines have kept their simplicity. Carpets, pottery, leather goods and jewelry: the same confident and precise gestures have guided Moroccan artisans for generations.
In the extramural city, or the new city of Marrakech, especially in Guéliz, there are several stores, modern shops, Bazaars, and shops specialized in leather goods that reflect the modern side of the ochre city.
